Medicare Plans & Coverage
You don't need to know all the options. That's what we're here for. Find what fits your situation below.
Advantage vs. Supplement — Which is Right for You?
The two most common paths. Here's how they compare at a glance.
| Feature | Medicare Advantage (Part C) | Medicare Supplement (Medigap) |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly Premium | Often $0 (varies by plan) | $100–$300+ per month |
| Doctor Networks | In-network required (HMO) or preferred (PPO) | Any Medicare-accepting doctor nationwide |
| Drug Coverage | Usually included (Part D bundled) | Separate Part D plan required |
| Dental / Vision / Hearing | Often included as extras | Not included — standalone plan needed |
| Out-of-Pocket Costs | Copays/coinsurance; annual maximum applies | Very predictable — most gaps covered |
| Referrals Needed? | Sometimes (HMO = yes, PPO = no) | Never |
| Best For | Lower monthly cost, extras, local network | Freedom of choice, complex health needs, travel |

"I want lower premiums and an all-in-one plan"
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Medicare Advantage plans bundle your hospital, medical, and often prescription drug coverage into one plan. Many plans have $0 premiums and include extras like dental, vision, hearing, and over-the-counter benefits that Original Medicare doesn't cover.
These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and are a popular choice for people who want simplicity and extra benefits at a low monthly cost.
- Often $0 monthly premium options
- Includes prescription drug coverage (in most plans)
- Extra benefits: dental, vision, hearing, OTC
- Annual out-of-pocket maximum for protection
- Hospital indemnity plans available to fill cost gaps
"I want the freedom to see any doctor with predictable costs"
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
A Medicare Supplement plan works alongside your Original Medicare (Parts A & B) to cover the gaps — like copays, coinsurance, and deductibles — giving you broad coverage with very few out-of-pocket surprises. Benefits are standardized by the government, so a Plan G from one carrier covers the exact same things as a Plan G from another.
The biggest draw is freedom: you can see virtually any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare, with no networks and no referrals required.
- See any Medicare-accepting doctor nationwide
- No referrals needed for specialists
- Standardized benefits: shop by price, not coverage
- Excellent for frequent travelers or complex health needs
Note: Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage. A separate Part D plan is required.
"How do I cover my prescriptions?"
Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)
Medicare Part D covers prescription drugs and is offered through private insurance companies. If you have Original Medicare with a Supplement plan, you'll need a standalone Part D plan. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, drug coverage is typically included.
Every Part D plan has a formulary (a list of covered drugs), and costs vary based on your specific medications. We compare every plan available in your area to find the one that covers your prescriptions at the lowest total cost.
- Covers brand-name and generic medications
- Plans vary — we shop them all for your specific drugs
- Helps protect against high drug costs
- Annual out-of-pocket cap on drug costs
"What about dental, vision, and final expenses?"
Dental, Vision, Hearing & Final Expense
Original Medicare does not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing. For many seniors, these are significant out-of-pocket expenses. Standalone plans for these benefits are available year-round and can be added at any time.
- Standalone dental plans (cleanings, X-rays, major work)
- Vision plans (exams, glasses, contacts)
- Hearing aid coverage
- Final expense / burial life insurance
- Available year-round, no special enrollment period needed
